It is school teachers who mediate between a rapidly
evolving world and the pupils who are about to enter it.
The profession of teaching is becoming more and more complex. The demands placed upon
teachers are increasing. The environments in which they work are more and more challenging.
Many Member States are reviewing the ways in which teachers are prepared for the important
tasks they perform on behalf of European society.
Developing systems for quality assurance and accreditation in teacher education is regarded as one of the most important ways of improving the quality and effectiveness of education as a whole. This study discusses current arrangements for evaluating and accrediting institutions and programmes for initial and in-service teacher education for primary and general secondary education in 30 European countries.
